Wildcats having lost
twice last year by to Leicester Despite Wildcats through Chris Stevens hitting both his opening shots, Wildcats found themselves 8-2 adrift after two mins due to two three pointers. A couple of missed shots were run straight back at Wildcats to increase Leicesters advantage to 5-17 after 5 mins a situation that was to occur through out the first three quarters. A period of basket for basket followed until the last minute of the first quarter when a Ben Head 3-pointer and Ed Parrys second score of the night reduced the margin to 8 points 22-30 Phil Chamberlain started the second half on fire and Chris Stevens hitting three from three fouls shots saw Wildcats come within 3 points of Leicester 29-32 with seven mins of the half remaining. The game was won and lost over the next five minutes as Wildcats failed to score whilst Leicester hit 17 to lead 29-49 and despite seven points from Ed Parry Leicester held the ascendancy at the half 36-59 If Wildcats are going to win games this season then they have to stop the opposition scoring and a poor Leicester side were scoring far to easily off missed Wildcats shots as poor defensive transition saw Leicester increase their advantage to 26 points 41-67 after five minutes of the third quarter. Following a period of basket for basket, Wildcats with four mins of the third quarter left trailed by 25 points 46-71, when Wildcats stopped Leicester from s coring over the remaining four minutes whilst hitting 16 unanswered points to reduce the deficit to nine points 62-71. The last quarter saw neither side gain the upper hand until with Leicester losing three players on five fouls saw Wildcats storm back to come within a hairs width of winning the game as the outscored the home side 8-1 to lose by just three agonising points |
But the last quarter ended in controversy as The incompetent table either failed to stop the clock or started the clock too early, which cost Wildcats valuable time which may or may not have seen them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Coach Parkes has signed the scoresheet under protest, due to the incompetence of the table officials. The two match officials Mr Hunt and Mr Powell who were excellent in the calling of the game, tried to oversea the fairness of the clock re-adding time on numerous occasions. Despite the frustration and disappointment of losing several records were broken, Ed Parry hitting a club record 35 points at any level, five players hitting double figures in a game for the first time, Wildcats hit 50% from the floor for the first time and for the umpteenth time posted a new highest score in a game 85. But the second half saw a great display from wildcats who won the 3rd quarter 26-12 and the fourth 27-19 to hit 53 points in a half This was indeed a great way to finish the year off, which almost finished in perfect style with a win the Wildcats so deserved. |
