Wildcats 38 v 53 Shropshire

Craig Hopkins hits 14 points on his debut, and grabs 7 rebounds
Wildcats having lost to Shropshire both times last season - 24-126 at Bennetts Bank, in Wellington and 19-68 at Aldersley. This was a perfect test to see how far Wildcats had come.

Shropshire started the better of the two sides although neither side managed to score during the opening four minutes. But by the end of the sixth minute Shropshire had taken a 5-0 lead despite Wildcats playing excellent offence and taking good percentage shots from where the offence intended them to be.

Chris Stevens started the ball rolling and this was quickly followed by two more from Phil Chamberlain and Craig Hopkins to give Wildcats the lead 6-5 after eight minutes. A Stevens 3-pointer gave Wildcats their biggest lead in the game so far 9-7 only for Shropshire to score a last gasp equaliser at the end of the first quarter.

Wildcats started the brighter of the two sides with new boy Craig Hopkins hitting six consecutive points to give Wildcats a four point lead 17-13. A 3-pointer from Ben head gave Wildcats a six point lead with three mins of the half remaining 21-15 but a Shropshire 7-5 run at the end saw them close the gap at the break 26-22.

Wildcats have always started the third quarter sluggishly and this fixture was no exception as Shropshire tied the game 26-26. Wildcats gained the upper hand with two scores from Chamberlain and Stevens to lead 30-26, but six points without response enabled Shropshire to take a two point lead 30-32 for the first time since the early stages of the 1st quarter.

Wildcats tied the game through Chamberlain 32-32 but eight unanswered points as a result of poor pass selection resulting in turnovers saw Shropsire take a nine point lead 32-41 with a minute remaining. Wildcats rallied in the last minute as Chamberlain and hopkins made it 36-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Wildcats tried to come back at Shropshire at the beginning of the fourth quarter but were only rewarded by Hopkins foul shooting and from five points down 38-43, Shropshire dominated the boards at both ends to runup a 10-0 run to win the game 38-53 in a disappointing finish to a game that Wildcats seemingly had under their control until midway through the third quarter when some of the Wildcats players lost their heads and took poor shots and made bad pass selections

Defensively Wildcats played very poor help defence allowing Shropshire players to drive into the key and draw fouls or take driving lay-ups, and when they missed poor boxing out enabled Shropshire to recycle.
